The illuminated acrylic “S”

SunIce has several stages. Each looks different, yet you should know at once where you are. So for Ascona 2025 we built a second “S”: three metres high, three metres wide and 25 centimetres deep, made of acrylic glass and lit from inside.
About the project
The brief
Several stages, one recognisable look. The mirrored “S” defines one stage, the acrylic “S” another. Both are instantly recognisable as SunIce, while each stage keeps its own look.
The challenge
The acrylic glass had to be bent without weakening the structure or cracking later. There is also a discreet service cover, so repairs can be made without taking the “S” apart.
Setup and show
Our build crew hangs the “S” on the truss, and the festival’s lighting technician controls it via DMX.
